The Progressive Parallelisms in the Book of Revelations

“Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.” — Revelation 5:5

Few books of the Bible are read with more fear and more confusion than Revelation. Many readers lay its seals, trumpets, and bowls end to end like a countdown clock, and then spend years arguing about the calendar. I have come to read it differently.

In this study I offer one key to the structure of the book. The three sevens are not three chapters of a single timeline. They are three views of the same age, from Christ’s first coming to His return, each told again with greater force.

One Age, Three Views

Revelation is addressed to seven churches, but its prophetic heart beats in chapters 4–22. The seventh seal opens into the trumpets (Rev. 8:1–2), and the seventh trumpet opens into the bowls (Rev. 15:1). Rather than a straight line, the book moves in a great spiral. Each orbit is wider and more intense than the last, and all of them come to rest at the return of the Lamb.

The Seals: God’s Program Unveiled

John weeps because no one can open the scroll. Then he turns to see the Lion and sees a Lamb standing as though it had been slain (Rev. 5:5–6). Power in the Kingdom of God is always cruciform. The riders of the first four seals are not a distant tribulation. They are the recurring trials of the whole age, and the sealed multitude of Revelation 7 shows that God’s people are kept through all of them.

The Trumpets: The Church in Cosmic Conflict

The same history is now told as spiritual warfare. One-third of the earth is struck, a warning and not a final destruction (Rev. 8:7–12), and still the world does not repent (Rev. 9:20–21). Yet the church is not forgotten. The two witnesses follow their Lord through death to resurrection (Rev. 11), and the seventh trumpet announces that the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord.

The Bowls: The Wrath of God Completed

The bowls begin with a song (Rev. 15:3–4). The church does not fear God’s wrath. She sings at the revelation of His justice. Unlike the trumpets, the bowls are total and final, and they end not in despair but in the hallelujah chorus of Revelation 19.

The Lamb Has Won

The adversary is bound and finally defeated (Rev. 20), and the city of God comes down from heaven. God wipes away every tear (Rev. 21:4), and the tree of life stands open to all (Rev. 22:1–2). The curse is lifted, and He dwells with His people forever.

This is the word the church in every age needs to hear. The Lamb holds the scroll, He opens every seal, He governs every trumpet, and He pours every bowl. I invite you to read Revelation not with fear but with worship. It is not a code to crack but a song to sing.

Soli Deo gloria.
